A Must Parenting Tips
Parenting is the most rewarding career for any person, but it also is the most challenging. It is a big wonder why there is no formal course on parenting to prepare people for this most exacting career of their life. People learn from their own experience and from the experiences of caring friends and relatives. However, every child is a unique personality and no uniform parenting rule or guideline can be universally applied. There are however several general or standard tenets that parents can follow to make parenting less stressful and traumatic. Here are some parenting tips that could make parenting a joy rather than a pain:
- Teach children by example – We often hear parents complain that their children are so disrespectful of them and of other adults or figures of authority. To teach children respect for others, parents must first respect the rights of their own children. The problem is that some parents think that their children are their own property and that they have the right to invade their space and even their thoughts. Children, however young, are a distinct individual and have the same rights as adults. Teach them respect by also respecting them.
- Teach children discipline – Teaching discipline to a child is one of the most difficult assignment of a parent. A parent cannot be too strict that children rebel nor can they be too relax or permissive that children tend to abuse such permissiveness. The best way to teach children discipline is to set rules that they should adhere to. In implementing the rules, parents should be firm and consistent but flexible at the same time.
- Teach children responsibility and accountability – Teaching children to be responsible and accountable for their action in preparation for adulthood is one very important duty of a parent. At a very young age, children should learn that their actions have corresponding effect to themselves and to other people. They should learn to own up to their mistakes and face the consequences of that mistake. Forever shielding children from the “ugliness” of life is not helping them at all.
One way to teach kids responsibility is to assign them tasks at home that they can easily perform, first with parental supervision, and then later, can be done by themselves.
The last but not the least parenting tip is to teach children how to love. A loving child is a behaved child. Parents can only teach love if they too are loving towards each other, towards other people and most especially towards their children.
